Macduff Brooks works hard at being a successful fly fishing guide in Wyoming and Montana, plays the oboe marginally, drinks too much Gentleman Jack, and struggles with relationships with women. He’s been Macduff Brooks for only a few years and often wants to return to his earlier existence as the happily married law professor Maxwell Hunt in Florida. It is not to be ― his wife El died in a horrible accident on the Snake River in Wyoming. Depressed, he was increasingly willing to accept “special work” for a federal agency, which resulted in near death from a beating in Guatemala. Saved and returned to Washington by embassy persons, his death from a stroke was announced in the press, and he was placed in a federal protection program with a new identity and location. As Macduff Brooks, he moves between his new homes in Montana and Florida, but cannot escape his Guatemalan assailants who increasingly doubt that he died. A client on his drift boat is killed - shot from the shore by a sniper, and his cabin is rigged with bombs, not helping his new relationship with a New York investment banker lady, who owns a ranch next to Brooks’ Montana cabin.

Gill Net Games, the fourth Macduff Brooks mystery and the first of a planned Florida/Cuba trilo-gy, begins with Macduff and Lucinda peacefully reading the newspapers at breakfast at Macduff’s Montana cabin. One story in the New York Times is about a body of someone Macduff knows found wrapped in a fishing gill net hanging from a channel marker near Sanibel, Florida. The next day, while fishing near the Montana cabin, Macduff and Lucinda discover another body wrapped in a gill net, also a person Macduff knows. Will there be more? How is Macduff involved? He is under pressure from Washington, D.C. to undertake a mission in Khartoum, dangerous enough to cause his fiancée Lucinda Lang to leave him. Much of the action takes place in Florida, especially in St. Augustine and the small Gulf Coast town of Oyster Bay.

Macduff Brooks and his new bride, Lucinda, are enjoying a Montana summer when they read in the N.Y.Times that Juan Mendoza, a member of Congress in D.C. from New Mexico, has disappeared while fly fishing in Cuba. Lucinda earlier had been asked by a Canadian travel magazine to go to Cuba and photograph author Ernest Hemingway's favorite places. With the aid of Dan Wilson and Juan's sister, Elena, also a member of Congress but from Connecticut, Macduff and Lucinda are soon off on a new adventure. Cuba proves to be as outstanding a venue for bonefish, tarpon, and permit, as it is a venue for mystery and intrigue. For the first time in their many adventures, no one appears seriously interested in killing either of them. But they become increasingly involved as more murders are attempted or completed. Both are enamored by the beautiful island, but perplexed by the paradoxes that Cubans face in their lives.
