Autumn in Foxton, the little Canadian village at the lake, and another body…this time in a forest. Not even a ghost deters Maggie Flanagan from trying to understand what happened. Nothing is what it seems to be—or is it? The maple forest appears on fire with the vivid autumn colors. It is a special day for Maggie Flanagan. Her good friend Adam, a conservation officer, is guiding her to his secret wildlife sanctuary. Armed with her camera, lightweight camping gear, and curiosity, she is prepared for adventure but not for what they find deep in the woods… The playful mood veers to somber when they discover a body in the trapper’s cabin. The mystery grows with strange sounds, the disappearance of ancient trees, and a missing backpack. Could it be the doing of the trapper’s ghost that is said to haunt the cabin? Maggie won’t have any of it. A scientist by training, she is convinced there must be a rational explanation. If that wasn’t enough of a puzzle to solve, Maggie has to contend with an unexpected rival who challenges her romantic hopes.

What could possibly link a woolly mammoth tusk to a parrot? Maggie Flanagan finds out when she unravels the mystery behind not just one death…but two. Exactly a year ago, Maggie settled back in Foxton, the little village in Canada where she grew up. She loves every bit of her new life. Even her photography business is slowly picking up. Content with her latest portrait, Maggie hurries to deliver it to elderly Holly Rigby. By chance, Maggie prevents the theft of Lulu, Holly’s old African Gray parrot, but arrives too late to save a man. Strangely, all the trails Maggie follows point toward her father’s past, and in particular to a fatality that occurred decades ago, in the Yukon, on a woolly mammoth excavation site. Her father’s time capsule indicates that he had been investigating the death. Are the two deaths truly linked and related in some way to mammoth tusks? But why steal a parrot? Maggie calls upon her childhood friend Denis Partridge, the local dentist, to answer her burning questions…but will the answers lead her to the truth?

How does a man in a business suit end up in the middle of a forest, appears dead one moment, the next disappears into thin air? Will Maggie succeed in helping Adam prove he even exists? On a warm Indian summer day, a newly appointed canine unit conservation officer gets a tipoff that someone built a tree hut for hunting in Painted Turtle nature reserve. Eager to help his colleague and familiar with Foxton's extensive forests, Adam heads into the reserve from the west, leaving the other officer, Sam, and her dog, Wilson, to enter from the east. Instead of a tree hut, Adam stumbles upon a man dressed in an office suit in the middle of the forest. Believing the man is dead, he calls the police, but when they arrive the man has disappeared and the search is fruitless. At his wits’ end, Adam calls upon Maggie to help him make sense of what he saw. Not only does Maggie find evidence that he wasn’t hallucinating, but they, together with Sam and Wilson, also discover the tree hut…which leads them to a far bigger illegal operation than could ever be expected in sleepy Foxton. If that’s not enough, Maggie finds a body and witnesses another death… How will she cope with it this time?
