George Dark is a thief and revolutionary determined to avenge his father’s brutal murder by a clandestine clique called Kalyptra who serve a secretive network of powerful Oligarchs. He is helped in his fight by Heinz, the head of a worldwide coalition of hacktivists. Between them they pursue a campaign to expose the Corporatist's malign manipulation of Europe's Governments. For their part, the Corporatists are determined that all opposition to their primacy is crushed. Kalyptra’s their leader, Marat, overseas the manipulation of politicians and disinformation to the general public to maintain the charade of democracy. His agents eliminate any challenge to the Oligarch’s authority. When Dark witnesses a brutal murder, he has to go into hiding pursued by Kalyptra’s expert thief-taker, Gittins. Whilst evading capture he meets a socialite, Susie Esterhazy, who disavows her privileges for a more fulfilling life. She helps George realise his lust for vengeance will destroy him. Susie, has a fight of her own, her soon to be step-father, Bilic, wants to acquire social respectability to cover his gangster roots. He is engaged to her mother, Klara, but plans to kill her and sell Susie to an Arab business associate, so he can seize their estates and titles in Hungary. He kidnaps Susie, but she escapes and finds Heinz and George. Bilic doesn't give up and kidnaps her again, taking her to her mother's estate in Hungary. However, Bilic is shot, ostensibly by a rival's assassin, but Klara seems to know it's going to happen. What is the connection between Stryckland and Klara? George and the hacktivist network prevent Kalyptra’s attempt to murder the British Prime Minister then seize control of the Government. They track Marat to his winery in Argentina and capture him and his aides. After a shoot out, they succeed in taking Marat to Amsterdam for trial. Meanwhile, Dark's nemesis, and second in command to Marat, The Rt. Hon. Giles Stryckland, has defected to the Asian Oligarchs, with a proposal to seize control of the American consumer market and overthrow his former masters, the American Corporatists. During their trial, Marat and his Kalyptra associates are hijacked from the courtroom and escape. They are found dead a few days later in a remote location in the Ardennes Forest, along with the hijackers and the burnt out shell of the helicopter. But who snatched and killed them, was it the Americans, for failing to seize control of the British Government, or did Stryckland and the Chinese take the opportunity to tie up loose ends. Or maybe the Corporatists made sure they couldn't reveal any secrets. I leave the question hanging.
