
Dr. Michael G. Strauss is a David Ross Boyd professor of physics at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He conducts research in experimental elementary particle physics at CERN laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, where he studies the fundamental particles and forces in the universe. With an interest in science and theology, Dr. Strauss attended Biola University, where he studied both subjects in detail. After graduating from Biola, he pursued a graduate degree in physics at the University of California in Los Angeles. As a graduate student, he was fascinated with quantum mechanics and subatomic physics, so he joined a high-energy physics experimental group doing research at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). At SLAC, he measured the polarization of particles produced in quark fragmentation. He graduated from UCLA in 1988 with his PhD in elementary particle physics. Dr. Strauss continued to do research at SLAC as a postdoctoral researcher in association with the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His research interests centered on using the silicon pixel vertex detector to identify heavy quark flavors while he was studying quantum chromodynamics as a member of the SLD experimental collaboration. In 1995, he joined the faculty of the Homer L. Dodge Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Oklahoma. As a faculty member, he conducted research at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory near Chicago, where he continued to study the properties of quark and gluon interactions. Dr. Strauss has primarily taught introductory physics classes to engineers, life science majors, and physics majors. He has received a number of awards for his teaching and research, including the Associated Students’ Outstanding Professor in the College of Arts and Science, the BP AMOCA Foundation Good Teaching Award, the Regents Award for Superior Teaching, and the Carlisle Mabrey and Lurine Mabrey Presidential Professorship. Dr. Strauss speaks at universities, schools, and churches throughout the world on the relationship between science and Christianity. He enjoys riding his bicycle through the rolling hills of Oklahoma and spending time with his wife and children. He is one of the four general editors of Zondervan’s Dictionary of Christianity and Science.
