
Michael Wuitchik is a Canadian novelist who lives with in Victoria, British Columbia, with his wife Shelley and labradoodles Finnegan and Marley. Yes, Finnegan made a cameo appearance in My Heart is Not My Own... He was born in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island and grew up in Richmond, B.C. Michael's first career was as a psychologist and to this end he obtained degrees at the University of British Columbia, the University of Guelph, and the University of Calgary. He specialized in multidisciplinary treatment of chronic pain and was a founder of the Canmore and Vancouver Pain Clinics. Michael has always been a writer. He wrote scientific articles on the psychology of childbirth in the late 1980's and, while working as a psychologist, wrote newspaper feature articles on topics ranging from Russian doctors to Vietnamese guerrilla fighters. Passionate about travel, Michael has also written about taking a slow boat from Vietnam to Cambodia and hotels in Cambodia with training programs for children. My Heart is Not My Own was inspired by a trip to Sierra Leone during the war in 2,000. It is a project that has taken him back to the country several times. He continues to manage aid programs within his adopted village of Sumbuya, Sierra Leone, and with the financial help of generous friends and family, has helped the locals to build a library, a school, funded teacher training and school fees for more than 70 children, and introduced a sustainable means of providing solar lights.
