Midge Bennett is sent to Duncan Hall at great sacrifice, because it is her mother's alma mater. Her sister Adele is attending Conway College nearby. Midge enters in her sophomore year which makes it difficult for her, because all the other girls in her class already know each other well.

Midge, a junior at a fashionable boarding school near Boston, fears an uneventful summer at her home in New York. But her cousin Debby's broken romance with a young minister, an inherited house in Mount Kisco, her self-centered older sister, and her myriad friends, turn Midge's summer into a kaleidoscope of adventure in which she not only is diverted but comes face to face with herself and her values. Midge is a "good" girl with just a touch of mischief to add piquancy. And though she has some bad moments, they only sharpen the happiness which inevitably awaits such wholesome young girls of fiction. The whole hopeful summer is topped off with a gorgeous wedding at the end, an icing to this cake which though it does not nourish guarantees to sweeten the palate of the adolescent. (Kirkus)
