Mouse Guard

Baldwin the Brave and Other Tales

2014

Behind every brave mouse, there is a tale. Kenzie's father tells him a bedtime story about a Wise Weaver who takes on three terrifying predators with the sharpest weapon of all: his mind. Young Saxon goes to see a puppet show about the great Baldwin the Brave, whose optimism and courage changed his town forever. Sadie hears the love story of the worthy mouse Thane in his quest to win the heart of the talented and beautiful Ilsa. Young Rand hears the rarely heard tale of the Black Axe Trio, three sisters who carried on a legend, each in their own special way. Plus, stories of Seyan, the land where Mouse warriors travel after death, and of Insects, the faeries of the Mouse world! Every hero was once a child, listening to the stories of the heroes who came before them. It is the same with the Mouse Guard. Eisner Award-winning creator David Petersen spins six mouse fables, as told to a few familiar young furs, in this beautiful collection. Four Mouse Guard Free Comic Book Day stories brought together for the first time, as well as two brand new tales, reminding us all to be brave, stay true to ourselves, and follow out hearts.

I have been a comic artist and a self-publisher since I was in high school in the mid-90's. In 2005 my book Will You Still Love Me If I Wet the Bed? was published by Top Shelf Productions; it won an Ignatz Award for Outstanding Debut. Top Shelf has since published two more of my autobio comic collections, Delayed Replays in 2008, and Alone Forever earlier this year. In September my first full length graphic novel, a memoir about adolescence and gender stereotypes called Tomboy, comes out from Zest Books. I have had comics published in numerous anthologies, drawn stories for the wildly popular Adventure Time series, and I am a columnist for the punk magazine Razorcake. Currently my cat Dracula is sitting on my lap, and his sister Wolfman is giving him the side-eye.

It's a curious thing to have to write about one's self, but we'll try to get through this without too much gnashing of the teeth. I grew up in Northern California where my father studies venoms, insects and other odd creatures. As such, most family vacations were spent in the wilderness, often hunting for previously said creatures and their venoms. I've lived a number of places around the world including, but not limited to Australia (Home of many venomous creatures.) and England (Home of not so many venomous creatures.). Eventually these wanderings came to a halt for a time making my mother quite happy and I studied landscape architecture at UC Berkeley. This led to studying film design at the American Film Institute and a lot of subsequent work filming things. Among the things, which have not been filmed, are two younger siblings; a sister who solves quite involved math problems and a brother who studies the insects, which live in streams. Neither them nor I have a pet raccoon, but if we did it would be like Missy. Presently I live in Hollywood where I drink tea and design films when I'm not writing graphic novels. You might have heard of some of the films I've designed, including You're Next, All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, and V/H/S 2. An Aurora Grimeon Story: Will O' the Wisp is my first graphic novel and the first graphic novel of my awesome artist Megan Hutchison. I don't eat mushrooms I can't identify.
