This is a brilliantly written and researched book by the author Peter T Egge. He focuses on 49 New South Wales’ prisoners sentenced to Penal Servitude for Life or Governor’s Pleasure for murder or attempted murder. The author worked as a Prison Officer in the New South Wales Department of Corrective Services for 16 years, from 1971 through to the mid 1980s. He ended his career at the rank of Senior Assistant Superintendent and in this book he draws on his vast experience dealing specifically with some of the murderers that he had encountered during his service. You as the reader will be astounded as you follow individual murderers through their crimes and into the time they spent in the Prison System. Some of the prisoners became household names for all the wrong reasons. Some of the crimes are quite horrific but all involve murder or extremely serious cases of attempted murder. Seven of these murderers were originally sentenced to death but were later commuted to Penal Servitude for Life. Eleven of the prisoners became “death in custody” cases. Besides the 49 prisoners that the author has focused on, there are significant numbers of other murderers who were perhaps co-accused or sit on the periphery of these cases. This is the seventh book that the author has written involving the New South Wales Department of Corrective Services, specifically within the era he worked at the world renowned “Long Bay Prison Complex”. During the 1970s and up to the 1980s, the Long Bay Prison Complex was known as a hard place for hard men and housed the hardest and toughest prisoners within Australia.
