Nell Kimball was the subject of a hoax memoir by popular novelist Stephen Longstreet. Longstreet used her memoirs as references in his works and then published the memoirs of Kimball (1854-1934), who he alleged was a prostitute and madam in New Orleans, in 1970. The hoax and plagiarism—from the works of Herbert Asbury—was discovered shortly after the book was published. There is no evidence that Kimball ever existed.
