Water. Many of us take it for granted. With the turn of a faucet, an endless supply runs across our hands, douses our face, fills our pots, kettles, tubs and swimming pools. We depend on the life-sustaining qualities of water for everything from the essential to the mundane, to refresh our bodies and replenish our thirst, to clean ourselves, our clothes, our automobiles and even to maintain our lawns. For us, the fortunate ones, safe water and sanitation is an integral part of our daily lives. Could we survive without it? Roughly one in ten of the world's population do not have access to safe water. Two in five people do not have access to adequate sanitation.(*) WaterAid is working to change that. Since 1981, the international non-profit organization has been transforming lives by helping the world’s poorest communities help themselves. Of Words and Water is a collection of water-themed works from authors around the globe, all of whom wish to contribute to WaterAid’s invaluable efforts. Our work is given freely: if you enjoy it please give generously to share the gift of clean water, the gift of life.

My conception on a hot, muggy night in Alabama was predicated on my father's forgetfulness and his lack of restraint. For that I am eternally grateful. Other than the nine months that followed that night, I accept full responsibility for my actions and output. I am credited as a screenwriter and short story author but, in truth, I am no more than a teller of tales, a weaver of plot threads, and a practitioner of dry humor. My aspirations are to entertain, educate, and never ever become a bore. After reading my work I hope that you can say, "He passed muster."

Mike Duron lives in a dark, dank cave, somewhere in Texas. He survives on a diet of pork rinds, pumpkin seeds, Busch beer, bologna, bread, and the occasional dollar burger from McDonald's. Beyond this, how does one say what this author was, is, and may some day be? Will the great St. Francis de Sales intercede as a patron for this flagitious fiend of fiction? Likely not. Will the sad, raging beast, Grendel, return for his cave some spooky night while the author is tapping away at his keyboard? Perhaps. Still, the author will tap, tap, tap, tap away ... as he tries to ignore the faint conversations of Nona, Decima, and Morta echoing in the darkness above him. Facebook Page

Annie Harmon prefers to speak pretentiously and refers to herself in third person. She does this quite successfully in Houston Texas, but assumes this success is due to the large number of crazies in the metropolises. Which might be why she moved there after sampling so many of our beautiful states. Or maybe it was because her husband was transferred there- she’s heard it both ways. She has one husband (the one who dragged her here), three children (who are each more beautiful than she could have hoped), and one dog (who is still trying to claim a spot as one of the above mentioned children). Annie is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Her writing credits include a novel; several children’s books; ghostwriting several chapters of a nonfiction book alongside author and JFK expert, Robert Groden; and working with a publicist (along with illustrator Bill Meganhardt) to write a picture book for John Moore Home Services’s 50th anniversary. That was a huge event with a long convoy of John Moore trucks filled with the Buddy picture book and Buddy teddy bears to donate to children in impoverished schools. Fun, fun, fun! I, er, Annie also published a local magazine, Zine, – directed towards the literary encouragement of young people; contributed to the Sun News newspaper with a regularly published humor column on raising children, “Raising New Mexico”; and offered editorial assistance to the Tucson Parent Magazine (yes, the offer was accepted); and worked as a freelance writer for The Tribune. Annie’s pet peeve: googling herself and finding two pages of Angie Harmon instead. Seriously, try it! What Annie likes to do when not writing: carving wood on her lathe and watching her fat fantail goldfish in her small backyard pond. Annie would love to be contacted for school visits either locally or via a video chat. She can be reached at readannieharmon@gmail.com. If, during communication, she actually speaks in the first person and says normalish things, please forgive this little idiosyncrasy; she’s still a pretty cool gal.

In his head, Jason Parent lives in many places, but in the real world, he calls New England his home. The region offers an abundance of settings for his writing and many wonderful places in which to write them. He currently resides in Southeastern Massachusetts with his cuddly corgi named Calypso. In a prior life, Jason spent most of his time in front of a judge . . . as a civil litigator. When he finally tired of Latin phrases no one knew how to pronounce and explaining to people that real lawsuits are not started, tried and finalized within the 60-minute timeframe they see on TV (it's harassing the witness; no one throws vicious woodland creatures at them), he traded in his cheap suits for flip flops and designer stubble. The flops got repossessed the next day, and he's back in the legal field . . . sorta. But that's another story. When he's not working, Jason likes to kayak, catch a movie, travel any place that will let him enter, and play just about any sport (except that ball tied to the pole thing where you basically just whack the ball until it twists into a knot or takes somebody's head off - he misses the appeal). And read and write, of course. He does that too sometimes. Danish (not the pastry) author writing in English. Mother of two, wife (of one), reader of many. Luurve coffee, sea views, rock music and scarves.

Mum was Swiss and Dad English and they met on a ship travelling to New Zealand so it's not surprising that my destiny was to become a travel writer. My writing began during World War Two when, aged ten, I started a series of stories about a gnome and a flying dragon who encountered twins and took them on amazing overseas adventures, first having to overcome the hazards of barrage balloons, falling bombs and rising shells. Being a hoarder I still have them, complete with illustrations. Apart from a few lapses, I have barely stopped writing since, which makes it seventy-five years-plus of scribbling. My main interest has been in how ordinary people cope with extraordinary circumstances, hence a trilogy on the effects of war on the children and grand children of participants. I also have a firm belief that it is better to be part of the solution than part of the problem. And I have contributed to such themes as addiction. My future projects will be involved with promoting some understanding of mild dementia and the continued presence of the real person behind it. It's a subject we are all going to need to get used to in the coming years. As sole carer for my husband and best mate who suffered from it, I am still coming to terms with his collapse and death early in 2013, but it's my plan to proceed into the future in his company. I'm also putting his memoirs on the Web - he had a hugely interesting life. You can find them at www.georgespenceley4.wordpress.com Mine can be found at www.sylvienickelsbooks.com Currently I am editing the trilogy I wrote a few years ago on the effects of war on successive generations in order to bring them out in one volume. The next project is to write a fourth book to round off the trilogy, with some or the main characters. It will be set in the kind of residential home for retired people in which I am currently living.
