Olurounbi, a young widow, succumbs to a covenant with Iroko Tree, King of the Woods who has supernatural power. She agrees to sacrifice her only child in exchange for a chance to escape abject poverty. This African folklore, OLUROUNBI’S PROMISE, set in the rural area of the Yoruba kingdom presents Olurounbi being subjected to the usual female-targeted societal blame for procreation issues. Her interaction with the king of the woods, Iroko tree in trying to solve her financial problems borne out of early widowhood also presents a diversity of cultural responses to socio-economic challenges. Would Olurounbi and her groom give birth to a male child who would inherit the throne of the kingdom?
