This e-book updates and expands upon a tremendous work of love and dedication, Only 317 Survived!, a book originally published by the survivors of USS Indianapolis (CA-35) and their families. This collection of first-person accounts was painstakingly gathered and edited by Mary Lou Murphy, wife of survivor Paul Murphy, who served as president of the USS Indianapolis Survivors Organization for more than 15 years. Initially self-published in 2002, the print version of Only 317 Survived! may eventually go out of print, and copies may become harder to find in future years and decades. To prevent this loss to history, authors Lynn Vincent and Sara Vladic committed proceeds from the sale of their book, Indianapolis: The True Story of the Worst Sea Disaster in U.S. Naval History and the Fifty Year Fight to Exonerate an Innocent Man (Simon & Schuster, 2018), to fund a digital version of Only 317 Survived! All proceeds from the sale of this e-book go to the USS Indianapolis CA-35 Legacy Association, into an account setup specifically to keep this title available. In doing so, the authors hope to preserve, in perpetuity, these historically critical first-person accounts, making them readily accessible to future generations.
