Patrick Howarth was the author of numerous works of history, biography and criticism, including 'The Year is 1851' and 'George VI'. Eight programmes of his poetry had been broadcast by BBC Radio 3. Howarth was a former diplomat who had worked in public relations, and had served in the Special Operations Executive (SOE) during the Second World War. He had also broadcast for the BBC in five languages.
