With Vacant Possession?
2018
This is a charming book that will appeal to anyone with a dream to follow however long it takes. Gillian Baxter is the author of a series of popular pony books and now after a break here is her first novel for a slightly older readership but still about horses and set in her new home country of West Wales. When Patsy became a widow at sixty she decided to follow a lifelong dream and buy a farmhouse in Wales to make a new life for herself and her two elderly horses. Things do not turn out quite as expected since Patsy discovers that her new home already seems to have an invisible occupant with a horsey history of his own and who resents her arrival. Then Patsy buys an almost wild welsh cob mare in foal at a local market and soon begins to find that the other occupant can sometimes be helpful.

Sole Possession

In this sequel to
With Vacant Possession?
at sixty five Patsy thought that her life in her once haunted farm house in West Wales was settled. She had her horses, her home bred champion stallion at stud, her faithful old Goliath to ride and her now married daughter living next door. Things began to change when she rescued an abandoned pony from the moor. There proved to be a mystery about the pony, who ran alone in his field on moonlit nights, and a search started to trace his background. Her neighbour asked her to take some of her holiday visitors riding and Patsy found herself committed to riding her stallion at the Royal Welsh Show. Then there was Mack, her friend who had shown her the ways of the wild hills, and about whom Patsy had to make some decisions. During a summer full of quests and horse shows and an old magic Patsy comes to discover a new direction in which her life might go. This book is set around the author’s home, many of the places and stories are either real or the stuff of local legend, and the Bluestone quarry from which some of the Stonehenge stones were taken is where it is described, across the stream which runs along the boundary of her land.
