Paul van der Merwe is an author, engineer and a Guinness World Record holder. Always looking for new and exciting ways to challenge the status quo, Paul launched his first book in the true sense of the word. The book was strapped to a model rocket along with a space LEGO pilot and literally launched into the African sky. He and his wife, Corlia, have two children and live in Pretoria, South Africa. Paul’s motivation for writing Lucky Go Happy is quite an interesting story: “During my first assignment as project engineer, I was responsible for executing the engineering design and drawings for the construction of a diamond processing plant, high up in the Maluti Mountains in the Kingdom of Lesotho. This was an extremely stressful period for me, and for the first time in my life I had problems falling asleep. In order not to think about work, I forced myself to have happy thoughts; hoping it would stop my mind from racing back to work. During these periods of being half-awake and half-asleep, the mind is extremely creative and this is where engineering (math actually) met psychology; fields that are generally poles apart. This odd marriage resulted in the formulation of some interesting perspectives on happiness, somewhere around 2am most mornings. My plan had backfired on me as I was now being kept awake formulating my theories on happiness. I captured my thoughts, in a note book that I kept under my bed, so I would remember them the next day. The number of notes and sketches grew, and eventually I had enough material to write Lucky Go Happy; allowing me to share my ideas with the world while also fulfilling my lifelong dream of publishing a book.”
