A specialist in the history of the state of Pennsylvania, Philip S. Klein earned a bachelor's degree from Franklin and Marshall (1929), a master's degree at the University of Chicago (1932), and a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania (1938). Klein taught at Pennsylvania State University from 1941 until his retirement in 1972.
