
As the first state to legalize same-sex marriage in Asia and host the first annual gay pride in the Sinophone Pacific, Taiwan is a historic center of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer culture. With this blazing path of activism, queer Taiwanese literature has also risen in prominence and there is a growing popular interest in stories about the transgression of gender and sexual norms. Since the lifting of martial law in 1987, queer authors have redefined Taiwan’s cultural scene, and throughout the 1990s many of their works have won the most prestigious literary awards and accolades. This anthology provides a deeper understanding of queer literary history in Taiwan. It includes a selection of short stories, previously untranslated, written by Taiwanese authors dating from 1975 to 2020. Readers are introduced to a wide range of themes: bisexuality, aging, mobility, diaspora, AIDS, indigeneity, recreational drug use, transgender identity, surrogacy, and many others. The diversity of literary tropes and styles canvased in this book reflects the profusion of gender and sexual configurations that has marked Taiwan’s complex history for the past half century. 李昂(1952~),本名施叔端, 台灣彰化縣人。中國文化大學哲學系 畢業後,前往美國奧勒岡大學攻讀戲 劇碩士。著作舉凡《人間世》、《年 華》、《她們的眼淚》、《愛情試驗》、《一封未寄的情書》、 《花季》、《迷園》、《自傳の小說》、《暗夜》、《外遇》、 《愛吃鬼》、《殺夫》、《北港香爐人人插:戴貞操帶的魔鬼系 列》、《李昂集》等數種。除了小說創作外,也有節奏輕快、筆調 浪漫的散文出現,如《貓咪與情人》。在作家姐姐施淑、施叔青的 薰陶下,喜愛寫作。就讀高中時期,便以處女作〈花季〉,發表於 1968年12月5日《中國時報‧人間副刊》,並於次年入選《五十七 年短篇小說選》。當時她以高一學生之姿發表這篇作品,從此踏入 文壇,陸續創作許多精采的作品。高中時期便積極從事小說創作, 寫有〈婚禮〉、〈零點的回顧〉、〈混聲合唱〉、〈有曲線的娃 娃〉、〈海之旅〉及〈長跑者〉等七篇小說,並發表於《中國時 報》、《文學季刊》、《現代文學》等刊物上。〈花季〉和〈婚 禮〉可視作李昂以生活經驗為基礎發展出來的作品,那時尚未受到 任何文學主義的影響;〈混聲合唱〉則為過渡時期作品,爾後〈有 曲線的娃娃〉、〈海之旅〉及〈長跑者〉,明顯地表現了精神分析 與存在主義的特色。 八○年代,女性書寫面臨重大的衝擊:情欲書寫出現,女性作 家開始探討身體的問題,李昂的幾部代表性作品在這個時候完成更  具時代意義。李昂的寫作,以女性及性議題為焦點,作品貫穿著強 烈的女性意識,觀照女性自身成長的命運,勇於挑戰父權體制。特 別藉由性的隱喻,寄予高度的象徵意義。一方面在陰性書寫的強調 中,對女性主義盲區進行尖銳質疑,另一方面以情欲書寫表達政治 訴求,對台灣不同時期的政治和歷史給予深刻批判。1983年的《殺 夫》、1985年的《暗夜》、1991年的《迷園》到1997年的《北港香 爐人人插》,李昂的作品見證了台灣社會從解嚴前的八○年代社 會,一直到解嚴後的九○年代社會,一連串的政治、社會、經濟等 多重面貌。 《殺夫》以傳統封建社會為背景、《暗夜》則以資本主義社 會為基調、《迷園》以台灣歷史命運與女性命運為主軸,一直到 《北港香爐人人插》以反對黨運動為發展場合。女性的形象越來越 明顯、清晰,對女性命運的探索,也更加深入。她擅於運用尖銳敏 感的筆觸,打破社會的制約和禁忌,以剖析人物心理來展現時代群 象、探討社會問題。作品曾獲《中國時報》報導文學首獎、《聯合 報》中篇小說首獎、賴和文學獎等。作品經英、德、法、日等多國 語文翻譯。

Chi Ta-wei was born in Taichung, Taiwan in 1972. He attended National Taiwan University, graduating from the Department of Foreign Language and Literature, and received a degree in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Los Angeles. He teaches literature at National Cheng Kung University in Tainan. Chi Ta-wei is most well-known for his science fiction novel Membrane (膜, 1996), which was one of the first queer novels to be published in Chinese. He has also published various short story collections and volumes of critical essays on queer and science-fiction literature, and translated several foreign works into Chinese, including a series of novels by Italian author Italo Calvino.

Chen Xue, born 1970, is a key figure in the development of a queer literature in Taiwan. She graduated from the Chinese Department of National Central University in 1993. Since 1995, she has produced 10 novels and short story collections. Her 2009 novel The Possessed was nominated for three Taiwanese literary prizes, and her 2004 work Child on the Bridge was published in 2011 in Japanese, with an English translation in preparation. The short stories "In Search of the Lost Wings of Angels" (tr. Patricia Sieber; tr. Fran Martin) and "Dust" (tr. Howard Goldblatt) are available in English-language anthologies. Her story "Butterfly"/《蝴蝶》, was made into a film by Hong Kong woman director, Yan Yan Mak, and won awards in Taiwan, 2004, and Hong Kong, 2005.

Li Ang (李昂; real name Shih Shu-tuan with Li Ang being her pen name) (born April 7, 1952, in Lukang, Taiwan) is a Taiwanese feminist writer. After graduating from Chinese Culture University with a degree in philosophy, she studied drama at the University of Oregon, after which she returned to teach at her alma mater. Her major work is The Butcher's Wife (殺夫: 1983, tr. 1986), though she has a copious output. Feminist themes and sexuality are present in much of her work. Many of her stories are set in Lukang. Li Ang is known for her idiosyncratic, candid and penetrating insights on gender politics in the social life in contemporary Taiwan. Beginning her writing career at the age of 16, she has published nearly twenty novels and collections of short stories centering on women in such topics as pubescent female psychosexuality, feminism and gender, sex and female subjectivity. Her bold and successive broaching of subjects bordering on the taboo within the cultural context of Taiwan has earned her extensive critical acclaim both in the world of Chinese letters and internationally. Translated into different languages and published world-wide, many of her works have been reviewed by leading newspapers in many countries, including The New York Times, and made into films and T.V. series. In 2004, Li Ang was awarded the “Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” by the French Minister of Culture and Communication in recognition of her outstanding contribution to world literature.
