Raina started out in a fabric tail for fun in 2008. Back then she was dealing with a lot of health problems that made normal mobility an issue. Swimming in a mermaid tail gave her the motivation to continue physiotherapy. In 2009 Raina upgraded to a semi-realistic tail. It was a bit disheartening at first, Raina had some trouble with the artist and the tail had many issues and fell apart quickly. Raina didn't let it stop her though, and got another artist to repair it. Then Raina started doing the odd birthday party and event. As things became more in demand between 2010-2011 it became obvious that Raina would need a super high quality functioning tail. Thus her tail she affectionalty calls Rapidash, was born. For much of 2012 Raina was on her own, until at the end of the year she joined forces with her sister, Mermaid Ama. Mermaid Ama stayed with Raina until mid 2013 when she decided to move on to other things. In the meantime, Raina met up with Mermaid Mimi she was working as an independent mermaid at the time, and the two decided to join forces to create Halifax Mermaids. When Mermaid Naida joined the mix, it seemed like three was the magic number. The girls have spent most of 2013 working together to entertain and educate, swim, and have fun. They even made a behind the scenes series you can watch on youtube. Raina has a degree in child and youth development, her bachelor of education (elementary), teaching license, and ECE certification. In May 2013 Raina published her first book, "Fishy Business: How to be a Mermaid". Raina also appeared on CBC's This Hour has 22 Minutes in 2013. Raina has been appearing in music videos from 2012 onward, and has done loads of public performing. Raina lives in Halifax with her merwrangler of 6+ years, Sean, and their adopted old kitty- Chicklet. Chicklet like to sleep on Raina's mermaid tails and protect them. When she's not a mermaid, Raina enjoys playing guitar, singing, photography, getting outside, going to movies, reading lots of books (mystery are her favourite) and spending time with her friends and family. Raina has big goals for Halifax Mermaids and is enjoying the time she gets to spend with her mer-girls.
