Una serie de relatos del escritor cubano que supo plasmar las peculiaridades de la historia, de la naturaleza, de la cultura y del hombre americano en uno de los conjuntos novelescos más trascendentes de la literatura hispanoamericana del siglo XX. En primer lugar, en este volumen están los relatos de vanguardia: El estudiante, El milagro del ascensor e Historia de lunas. El estudiante, que el autor dejó inconcluso, pertenece a la corriente surrealista, y hasta ahora sólo había sido publicado en una revista venezolana. La segunda parte, titulada La guerra del tiempo, comprende Viaje a la semilla, El camino de Santiago y Semejante a la noche Complementan esta selección, otros cuatro sugerentes relatos: Oficio de tinieblas, Los fugitivos, Los advertidos y El derecho de asilo. Son todos relatos llenos de magia, ese colorido y esa musicalidad con que Alejo Carpentier caracterizó su obra.

Writings of Cuban author, musicologist, and diplomat Alejo Carpentier influenced the development of magical realism; his novels include Lord, Praised Be Thou! (1933) and The Kingdom of This World (1949). Alejo Carpentier Blagoobrasoff, an essayist, greatly influenced Latin American literature during its "boom" period. Perhaps most important intellectual figure of the 20th century, this classically trained pianist and theorist of politics and literature produced avant-garde radio programming. Best known Carpentier also collaborated with such luminaries as Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud, Georges Bataille, and Antonin Artaud. With Havana, he strongly self-identified throughout his life. People jailed and exiled him, who lived for many years in France and Venezuela but after the revolution of 1959 returned. He died in Paris, but survivors buried his body in Havana.
