The story begins and ends in London, opening with the murder of a receptionist who originates from a village close to the Merrion's home. Arnold is on the scene immediately and is more than happy to accept help from Merrion and his wife, who is well acquainted with several of the people connected with this unfolding story of unexplained disappearances in South America, a valuable treasure which is a stimulus for crime and two further murders.
