My interest in fiction writing is to create intriguing stories with strong, engaging and admirable characters and a dramatic plot that explores philosophical and ethical themes relevant now or in the readers' lifetimes. To that end they are set in the near future where current technology is achieving its potential (in areas like artificial intelligence and genetic engineering), and it is the consequences and ethics of that which I like to explore. While I aim for good, plausible science as a background to the stories and plot, my primary focus is the story and its dramatic possibilities. I am a scientist in molecular biology by training. I have been writing a philosophical column for Australian Mensa for many years and I am author of the chapter Good Without God in The Australian Book of Atheism (2010: Scribe). During that time I have also written a number of short stories, two of which won prizes in Mensa competitions. I moved into writing longer fiction when I self-published my first novella, Frankensteel. Since then I have published its prequel novel The Geneh War and the sequel, Time Enough for Killing is awaiting publication.
