Roland is a German soldier that volunteered for the Bosnian Croat side (the HVO) in the Bosnian War (1992–95) and the ethnic Albanian rebels (the KLA) in the Kosovo War (1998–99). He has a university degree in law and is currently working for a law firm in Prishtina, Kosovo. He published a study on radical Islam in Kosovo and his analysis on counterinsurgency "A-how-to guide for counterinsurgency" has been referenced by NATO as a recommended read.
