Rona Simmons has written both historical fiction and nonfiction. She is the daughter of a WWII fighter pilot and wife of a US Navy pilot and is proud to honor veterans and their histories through her work. In her latest book, A Gathering of Men, Simmons combined her passion for history and research to tell a story with a unique perspective on the Second World War—this time, giving voice to all those who served in the air forces whether command officers, airmen, or ground crews. Previous works include the book Images from World War II (2016) celebrating the art of her co-author, Jack Smith, a WWII veteran and artist and The Other Veterans of World War II: Stories from Behind the Front Lines (2020) released by Kent State University Press, and telling the stories of nineteen noncombat soldiers, sailors and marines. Simmons' stories, articles, and interviews have appeared in regional and national literary journals and in online and print magazines and newspapers. She is active in the local writing community (as a speaker and member of the Atlanta Writers Club and the Georgia Writers Association) and local veterans organizations (as a member of the Atlanta World War II Roundtable, the North Georgia Veterans Group, and Stories Behind the Stars, a group that is documenting the stories of all 400,000 WWII fallen). She is also a contributing author and book reviewer for DODReads.org, an organization dedicated to reading and lifelong learning. Rona Simmons is based in north Georgia. She graduated from Tulane University and received her post-graduate degree from Georgia State University. Prior to launching her writing career, she spent thirty years in business and retired as a consulting practice lead for IBM.
