Ruby’s mom spoils her carefree summer by insisting that she needs a thing. Something worthwhile. A passion. Ruby’s older sister plays the violin. Her brother is a chess champion. Ruby is a couch potato. While searching for her thing, Ruby sees a discarded antique dresser on the roadside and drags it home to refurbish. She gives the dresser a hot pink, shabby-chic makeover. She decides that refurbishing furniture is her thing. Then she learns something the dresser contains an ancient secret that leads her to unlikely friendships, zany situations, and encounters with a trickster called the Boss Cricket.
