This book is the sequel to the Prisoner of Zenda. The king is jealous of Rudolf Rassendyll and is suspicious of the Queen's feelings towards him. She sends a red rose to Rudolf, and a letter of goodbye to Fritz von Tarlenheim. Count Rupert of Hentzau is plotting his return, and intercepts both the rose and the letter.
