Two things fired my imagination when I first heard the story of Ruth Stull. One was the joy that she showed, having forfeited the privileges of the life in the United States for the difficult and dangerous circumstances of the jungle. The love of Christ in Ruth Stull and her husband turned sacrifice into an honor. The second thing that moved me was the similarity between Ruth's story and that of God’s own Son. There was something in the Stull's leaving the safety and privilege of civilized life for the dangers of the jungle that reminded me of Jesus’ journey from the Father’s right hand to the land of Herod, Caesar, and Caiaphas. The impact was profound enough that the name of Ruth Stull has remained in my memory for more than sixty years. It is a thrill to learn that Sand and Stars is being republished.
