In this book, early fluent readers will learn how the manatee came back from the brink of extinction and serves as an important species in its environment. Vibrant, full-color photos and carefully leveled text will engage young readers as they learn more about the animal’s habitat, diet, behaviors, and current status, as well as how conservation efforts helped these sea cows make a comeback. A Take a Look! infographic aids understanding, sidebars present interesting, supplementary information, and an activity offers readers an opportunity to extend discovery. Children can learn more about the manatee using our safe search engine that provides relevant, age-appropriate websites. Saving the Manatee also features reading tips for teachers and parents, a table of contents, a glossary, and an index. Saving the Manatee is part of Jump!’s Great Animal Comebacks series.

My favorite book as a child was an educational book titled I Want to Be a Reporter. It was about the job of a reporter and described the skills needed to tell stories in writing. I asked my mom to read it to me every night. It was fascinating to me! Since discovering that book, I have loved the idea of writing for a living. As a K-12 educational writer and editor, I get to work on books and teaching materials that inform and inspire students. I have written about everything from the underwater home of a spider to the history of hip-hop music and WWI history. While I love researching and writing about all kinds of subjects, my experience so far has been mostly in science, social studies, biographies, music, and arts and crafts topics.
