Becky Wood is a 17-year-old girl who dreams of going to university. Cathy Davies is a newly qualified teacher hoping to change the lives of underprivileged teenagers through education. They are brought together at Brookside Comprehensive, a Leeds high school. The other students and teachers have long since given up hope of improving their own lives, but Becky and Cathy vow to be different. However, their dreams are under threat as both are hiding secrets from their pasts which threaten to destroy their happiness.
