Saren Jacobs is nearing the end of her senior year at Rubicon High School in Tennessee, and outwardly she is the same successful student and “girl next door” that she’s always been. Having recently been awarded a scholarship to Auburn University, she is set to fulfill her dream of becoming a veterinarian. However, for a couple of months, she’s been dealing privately with the symptoms of a mysterious illness. Even though her grandmother won’t believe her, Saren knows she’s not pregnant. But, what is wrong with her? In addition to dealing with the strange and troubling sickness that comes and goes on a whim, she is faced with an unexplainable attraction to Lliam McClellan, a handsome new senior at Rubicon High, who just happens to be in her Calculus class and who won’t quit staring at her with his piercing blue-gray eyes. As the novel unfolds, nothing is quite what it seems. Neither her past nor her future is as certain as she once thought it to be, and apparently, supernatural forces do exist in the world. Yet, through all of the turmoil, she realizes that she must cling to the important things—relationships with loved ones, a reverence for the natural world, and a sense of who she really is.
