A Vampire Romance

2015

~ Part 1/5 of the Serenade Serial, a supernatural vampire story ~ For six centuries, the vampire Irene has hunted human prey to feed from their necks, sometimes taking them to her bed, too. For almost as long, she has preserved her memories in music notes, composing on her piano but never sharing except with her offspring. So when, during a trip to Paris, she stumbles onto a bar in which a pianist plays her music for the patrons, she’s flabbergasted that anyone might be enjoying her compositions and just as outraged that they’ve been stolen from her. Her first instinct is to take the pianist’s life as retribution, but a few words exchanged with the talented, intriguing and insolent Rachid might change her mind… (18.000 words)

~ Part 2/5 of the Serenade Serial, a vampire romance story ~ After spending a night with Rachid, vampire Irene is in a state of complete confusion. She’s been living for centuries, has met and bedded countless men, and she can’t understand what is so special about this one human. Just like she can’t understand how listening to him play her music on the piano touched something inside her so that she’s able to compose again after decades of being blocked. Needing to hear him play some more – and possibly enjoy his company again – she returns to the piano bar where she first met him. But while Rachid is there as she hoped, it’s another man who approaches her, a vampire, who happens to be Rachid’s companion: Oliver. His interest in her music should flatter her, but instead she finds herself annoyed that he thinks he knows her music better than she does. She’s intent on putting him in his place… but whose side will Rachid choose? (20.000 words) Please note - While it references a Male/Male relationship, the entire serial will not show these two characters exchange anything more ‘on the page’ than touching above the waist and kissing/biting.

~ Part 3/5 of the Serenade Serial, a vampire romance story ~ What is it about the human Rachid that so unsettles vampire Irene? Why did meeting him allow her to compose music again? Why is she so intent on writing a piece of music about that encounter – and why is it so difficult to get it just right? More importantly, why, when she has her fangs in another man’s neck, can she think of nothing else but Rachid’s blood… and Rachid’s body? Rather than waiting for him to come to her, she goes to him again and compels him to give her his neck. How will Rachid react to this intrusion in his mind and to Irene taking by force what he would have offered of his own free will? And will Rachid’s vampire companion Oliver take offense to this manhandling of his pet? (22.000 words)

~ Part 4/5 of the Serenade Serial, a vampire romance story ~ Vampire Irene is not running away. To others, it might seem like running away, but who cares what they think? She’s absolutely not running away from the human Rachid and his vampire companion Oliver, who asked her for something she cannot, will not give. Still, things would have been much easier if all they’d wanted was sex! But as she travels to Berlin, London, and finally New York, the memory of them follows her, like music echoing in her mind. ~ The conclusion to the Serenade Serial, a vampire romance story ~ All vampire Irene wanted was to finish one piece of music. She didn’t seek romantic entanglements, she didn’t want to be responsible for new vampires again, and she certainly never had a calling for couples counseling. However, life has a strange way of not giving her what she wants, but what she needs… (20.000 words)

Kallysten is a writer of romance novels and short stories, most of them with paranormal elements. Her first eBooks were published by Linden Bay Romance in 2005. The defunct Venus Press subsequently published a few of her short stories. Because so many of her stories are linked as series and part of the same universe, she decided it would make sense to have them all in the same place, which is why she self-published, first with the co-op Alinar Publishing and now on her own. When she sees calls for submissions that speak to her muse, she sometimes tries for them, and was published this way by Samhain and Torquere.
