My mom always told me that when I was a little boy, I rode my bike so far away my dad had to hide it; how I’d disappear only to be found inside an empty neighbor’s house trying to get their bird out; how I’d vanish in the department store and be discovered running in circles around the mannequins in the window; how the police brought me home from who knows where; how I got kicked out of nursery school (how do you get kicked out of nursery school?); and how she finally took me to the doctor to find out what was wrong with me. “He just runs away and disappears all the time! I can’t keep up with him! What do I do?” The doctor said, “If you told me your son sat in a chair and stared out the window all day, I’d feel sorry for you. The fact is, you have a healthy, smart, little boy. My advice to you is, when he runs, run after him!” I was a music major, then a religious studies major, then dropped out of college, was VP of a very successful nonprofit organization with Keith Green (a best-selling recording artist), trained inmates in a federal prison for seven years, and cofounded Premier Pet Products, a company that grossed $20 million per year and went on to win a Presidential award of Entrepreneur of the Year from the Small Business Administration. I have five wonderful kids. I’ve made millions and lived in poverty (in that order), but I’ve never lost my joy of life or my life in God. There’s a purpose and plan for each of us, and when you find it - run!
