I was born to immigrant parents in Western New York and raised on chai, curry, mac 'n' cheese, and vacations that alternated between the Great Lakes and the sweltering heat of Kolkata, India. Growing up, I was always encouraged to explore creative activities - dance, music, theater, and writing. But I never really imagined writing a novel until I felt compelled to write one - after a dream. Yes, that's right - a dream so startling it woke me in the middle of the night. Awakening Kali, my debut novel, is a result of that dream. Loosely based on a true story, it portrays the life of an Indian women who believes she is cursed by the goddess Kali. Now I should mention that I am a physician, wife, and mother of two small children, so I have very limited time to write. But that dream, and the reasons behind it, compelled me to find the time.
