When newly widowed Janey Whithaven receives a call to retrieve the body of Montpier's most recently departed, she's caught off guard. Her husband isn't even cold in in his grave. But as the only funeral home left in this part of the Lake of the Ozarks, she really doesn't have a choice. Janey thought she'd have time to grieve and figure out what to do next with the business. She never imagined being asked to step right into her darling Norm's loafers only a week after his death. Compounding her grief - and sudden promotion to head mortician - Janey is shocked to discover her newest client is none other than Victoria Jones, her nemesis from her beauty school days. It doesn't take long before Janey learns that maybe Victoria's death wasn't the accident the coroner deemed it. Since this knowledge comes about when Victoria's ghost appears at the foot of the embalming table, it's clear something else is going on in Montpier. And that something includes murder. Unwilling to ignore a miscarriage of justice even for Victoria, Janey is also unable to tell anyone she's now seeing - and talking to ghosts. The only answer is to embark on her own investigation, and hope she doesn't end up as the next client in Whithaven funeral home. Nothing would please Janey more than to see Victoria laid to rest once and for all. Unless she uncovers the truth of Victoria's death, neither of them will ever be at peace. She's come to term with her houseguests, as she likes to call them, but Victoria Jones seeking help from the afterlife was only the first. Now she must figure out why Kara Navarro is constantly crying, and how to make the tears stop. If that wasn't enough, the dreams of the mysterious older woman continue. The woman wants something, but Janey can't figure out exactly what. And whatever it is, Janey knows that this woman is determined. Before, she would have thought it was just a bad dream. Now? She knows she has to decipher how to help this woman, and get back her nights. To complicate matters, Janey's personal life is all over the place. Her sister is here to stay, there's someone else moving in, and the annoying and mysterious detective is now her official tenant. What could go wrong with any of this? Finally, it's one thing to speak to ghosts. It's quite another to realize there's an entire magical world out there. Janey isn't sure she wants to be drawn into it. With a menacing spirit, and two equally menacing spiritualists, she's just hoping to make it to the next week. When it comes to the Whithaven Funeral Home, the locals are just dying to get in. Fame isn't all it's cracked up to be. At least, that's my thought when my latest corpse comes into the funeral home. It wasn't bad enough we had all the folks out front looking for some kind of supernatural enlightenment, now we have upset fans of one of the biggest music stars. No rest for the weary. If that wasn't enough to be dealing with, the Coneys are still after me, for things I don't even understand. While I'm determined to stick to my lane, for lack of a better phrase, they, and all the other magical people around me seem determined to drag me further into a world where I don't belong.
