Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), o célebre autor de As aventuras de Robinson Crusoé foi um dos mais prolíficos escritores que se conhece, com mais de 500 títulos publicados. Entre os inúmeros gêneros que abordou (religião, política, sociologia, história, ficção, poesia) no seu jornal The Review (que ele escrevia praticamente sozinho). Defoe acreditava profundamente na reencarnação e escreveu estes Contos de Fantasmas baseado em entrevistas ou relatos conhecidos. Segundo ele, os episódios aqui relacionados – com exceção dos que estão agrupados sob o título de "Falsos fantasmas" – são todos verdadeiros e, em alguns deles, ele estaria disposta a ir em juízo, levando testemunhas e provas concretas. "A aparição da senhora Veal" é um dos exemplos.

Daniel Defoe (1659/1661 [?] - 1731) was an English writer, journalist, and spy, who gained enduring fame for his novel The life and strange surprizing adventures of Robinson Crusoe: of York, mariner (1719). Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest practitioners of the novel and helped popularize the genre in Britain. In some texts he is even referred to as one of the founders, if not the founder, of the English novel. A prolific and versatile writer, he wrote more than five hundred books, pamphlets, and journals on various topics (including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology and the supernatural). He was also a pioneer of economic journalism.
