This authoritative single-volume collection of Norse legends, compiled by a great scholar and translator of Norse mythology, masterfully retells tales of old. Here are enchanting accounts of the creation of the world and the great gods who ruled it, among them their leader Odin; Thor, god of thunder and enemy of giants; Loki, a mischievous—and often evil—trickster; the Valkyries, a band of warrior-maidens; as well as sagas of Volsung, Sigmund, Helgi, Sigurd, and other lesser folk.Students of literature, mythology, history, and anthropology will welcome this treasury of lyrical translations of stories taken from poems in the Old Norse tongue. Brimming with romance, action, and legendary feats, these early works of Western literature will also appeal to anyone interested in the beguiling myths and legends of the Far North.
