Svetlana, the central figure of the story, is the "six and half year-old" daughter of a Soviet couple leading a happy and comfortable life. Arkady Petrovich Golikov (1904—1941), better known as Arkady Gaidar, was a Soviet writer, whose stories were very popular among Soviet children. He died young in World War Two combat.
