Almost forty years ago, the editorial workers at The New Yorker magazine tried to join the Newspaper Guild. "The Committee" tells that story, including a famous writer's declaration that "Dostoevski didn't have a dental plan" and the Editor's (William Shawn's) denial that the magazine had any management at all.
