《亲自为我拭去泪水之日》和《水死》是两部内容互有交织的作品。故事背景被设定为日本战败之际。当时,“我”的父亲常在家里款待来自于松山军营的青年军官,由此得知日本即将战败,便响应青年军官们的建议——夺取神风敢死队的飞机并挂上炸弹,飞往东京炸死天皇以挽回战败投降的结局。某一夜,父亲携带“红色皮箱”独自由洪水泛滥的河上乘船而下,却因翻船而溺水身亡,“红色皮箱”后被警察送回。多年来,“我”一直希望查阅皮箱中的资料,以便构思“水死小说”,却得不到母亲支持,便依据想象创作了小说《亲自拭去我的泪水之日》,却未能成功描绘出事件的经纬。在查证和写作过程中,高呼“天皇陛下万岁”慷慨赴死的超国家主义思想,却从父亲身上逐渐显现。于是“我”转而追溯源头,由此发现这种“时代精神”早已深深植入自己的内心,“我”内心明显摇摆于战前崇拜天皇和战后民主主义两种截然不同的时代精神之间。
