히가시노 게이고 장편소설. 어린 시절부터 친구에게 철저히 인생을 농락당해 온 한 남자의 처절한 자기고백이다. 또한 서서히 침몰해가는 주인공이 불타는 복수심과 살인 충동을 증폭시키는 심리적 과정을 주인공 일인칭 시점의 섬세한 필치로 묘사한 문제작이다. 인간 내면의 어두운 심연, 부조리한 사회의 단면을 날카롭게 묘사해 온 작가 특유의 솜씨가 유감없이 발휘되어 있다는 점에서는 부도덕한 사회를 살아가는 인간 군상의 갖가지 모습과 심리를 파헤친 사회심리 소설에 가깝다고도 할 수 있다. 유복한 치과 의사의 아들로 태어난 다지마 가즈유키와 가난한 두부 가게 아들 구라모치 오사무. 소꿉친구인 두 소년은 가정 형편만큼이나 성격도 대조적이다. 어려움 없이 자란 다지마는 우유부단하고 내성적인 반면 구라모치는 삐딱하지만 세상 물정에 밝고 말재주도 뛰어나다. 다지마는 초등학교 5학년 때 같은 반 친구로 구라모치를 만난 이후 점차 걷잡을 수 없는 불행과 어둠의 나락에 빠져든다. 그리고 그때마다 주변에 구라모치의 불길한 그림자가 어른거리는 것을 느낀다. 번번이 구라모치에게 이용당하면서 피폐해질 대로 피폐해진 다지마는 마음속으로 구라모치에 대한 증오와 살의를 키워 가지만 결행에 이르지 못 한 채 끔찍한 악연이 계속 이어진다. 어느 날, 고뇌하는 다지마 앞에 수수께끼의 한 인물이 나타나고, 그는 다지마와 구라모치의 악연에 관한 놀라운 비밀을 털어놓는다. Born in Osaka, he started writing novels while still working as an engineer at Nippon Denso Co. (presently DENSO). He won the Edogawa Rampo Prize, which is awarded annually to the finest mystery work, in 1985 for the novel Hōkago (After School) at age 27. Subsequently, he quit his job and started a career as a writer in Tokyo. In 1999, he won the Mystery Writers of Japan Inc award for the novel Himitsu (The Secret), which was translated into English by Kerim Yasar and published by Vertical under the title of Naoko in 2004. In 2006, he won the 134th Naoki Prize for Yōgisha X no Kenshin. His novels had been nominated five times before winning with this novel. The Devotion of Suspect X was the second highest selling book in all of Japan—fiction or nonfiction—the year it was published, with over 800,000 copies sold. It won the prestigious Naoki Prize for Best Novel—the Japanese equivalent of the National Book Award and the Man Booker Prize. Made into a motion picture in Japan, The Devotion of Suspect X spent 4 weeks at the top of the box office and was the third highest‐grossing film of the year.
