Antonio Machado is one of the towering figures of twentieth-century Spanish poetry, a writer whose austere musicality has been said to capture the very essence of the language. Don Paterson was born in 1963 in Dundee, Scotland. He is Professor of Poetry at the University of St Andrews, and since 1996 has been poetry editor at Picador MacMillan. He is the author of seven books of poetry, and also works as a guitarist and composer.
