Diego is an employee at the Ministry of Justice in Rome and the father of a gravely disabled boy. Though the birth of his son sent shockwaves through his life and his marriage, Diego is managing, now, to give himself and his family some semblance of routine and normality. His universe and its relative calm are thrown into turmoil by his meeting with Walid, an elegant and mysterious Middle Eastern man who is also the father of a disabled child. The two men, united by their shared pain, become friends and even as Walid's behavior grows increasingly mysterious, Diego is seduced by the man's charm and magnetism. He follows Walid on nocturnal odysseys into the underbelly of the Eternal City, on visits to dark places peopled with obscurely threatening figures. All evidence now points to the enigmatic figure's connection to sinister dealings and Diego senses that his association with Walid is involving him in matters that will threaten everything he holds dear. What does Diego really know about Walid other than his being the father of a disabled son, like himself? What exactly is terrorist? spy? international criminal? Or is Diego guilty of projecting his own barely acknowledged fears and doubts onto an innocent man? To answer these questions, Diego will have to follow his relationship with this man through to its frightful end, in the process asking himself some hard questions about his own nature.

Giancarlo De Cataldo è Giudice di Corte d'Assise a Roma, città nella quale vive dal 1973. Scrittore, traduttore, autore di testi teatrali e sceneggiature televisive, ha pubblicato come autore diversi libri, per lo più di genere giallo. Collabora con «La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno», «Il Messaggero», «Il Nuovo», «Paese Sera» e «Hot!». Il suo libro più significativo è Romanzo criminale (2002), dal quale è stato tratto un film, diretto da Michele Placido, e una serie televisiva, diretta da Stefano Sollima. Nel giugno del 2007 è uscito nelle librerie Nelle mani giuste, ideale seguito di Romanzo criminale, ambientato negli anni '90, dal periodo delle stragi del '93, a Mani Pulite e alla fine della cosiddetta Prima Repubblica. I due libri hanno alcuni personaggi in comune come il Commissario Nicola Scialoja e l'amante, ex prostituta, Patrizia. Ha scritto la prefazione per l'antologia noir La legge dei figli della Casa Editrice Meridiano Zero, e ha curato l'introduzione al romanzo Omicidi a margine di qualcosa di magico, scritto da Gino Saladini, edito da Gangemi. Nel 2006 cura per la Rai il progetto "Crimini", una serie tv scritta da grandi autori italiani, chiamati a trasporre in film di 100 minuti l’estrema diversità, e il fascino, delle realtà locali italiane. Nel 2010 va in onda una seconda serie e il primo episodio è "La doppia vita di Natalia Blum" di Gianrico Carofiglio girato a Bari con Emilio Solfrizzi. Giancarlo De Cataldo dichiara in merito: "è più facile spiegare le contraddizioni di un paese attraverso il giallo che la storia d’amore". Del 2010 è "I Traditori", romanzo ambientato durante il Risorgimento italiano.
