"Caverns" is the first book in a (currently) four book series by Mr. O'Donnell. As the title implies, the focus is on a character named McGill Feighan. In this first book, the origin of McGill and the start of his adventerous life is revealed. "Caverns" is at first a light-hearted read, but you soon find yourself drawn into the life of the hero, his triumphs and despair. McGill is a "flinger", a person who can teleport anything (himself, other people, things) anywhere that he's been before. But even for a flinger, he does not lead a normal life due to unusual events in his life, when he was a newborn. Much of the story revolves around McGill's growing-up and learning to deal with his powers, as well as the assortment of people and aliens that take an interest in his life (both good and bad).

In our last adventure, McGill Feighan was flinging across the universe in search of the Far Being...and the dread Organization was crisscrossing the galaxy aiming to atomize McGill Feighan! — Now we join our hero on the seaworld Delurc—a planet whose inhabitants combine the sociability of sharks with the compassion of piranhas. Not exactly nirvana for a nineteen-year-old with healthy hormones... But fortunately, McGill Feighan is unsinkable...

McGill Feighan was not your average 22-year-old Terran. He made his rather substantial living flinging to the far corners of the universe. He devoted his life to a so-far frustrated quest for the Far Being Retzglaran. And an interstellar crime syndicate known as The Organization had put out a contract on him when he was four days old.. All of which only partially explains why McGill finds himself teamed up with an Actuni plant-monk, fleeing the Flinger Network, PsychSection, and seeking an encounter with the most ancient of all mysteries.

How could McGill Feighan know that a fun weekend on Rehma the Bird World would turn into a frightening go-round with a mysterious mutant virus, an assault by galactic goons, and, as always, into a frustrating search for the Far Being Retzglaran?
