Short story - A deep-space exploration crew is hired to locate a long-lost generation ship, one among many treasure hunts that will likely lead nowhere. What they find is a civilization in desperate peril of which they are not even aware and a dangerous piece of technology in the hands of a species not yet ready to use it.
