The Lindisfarne Gospels is one of the greatest treasures in the British Library. Dating from the eighth century, the book is a magnificent work of art, its pages adorned with breathtaking illumination and elegant calligraphy. Beyond this, however, the images, and the techniques employed to create them, show a multi-cultural society of surprising sophistication. This pocket-sized introduction to the Lindisfarne Gospels reproduces a selection of images from the great work at the same size as they appear in the original book, thus allowing you to see in detail the maker's astonishing skill and artistry. The accompanying text by a leading authority on the work provides illumination of a different but no less important kind. Michelle P. Brown explains the background and symbolism of the Lindisfarne Gospels, revealing a world of fascinating richness and complexity. Treasures In Focus is a series of pocket guides to some of the British Library's greatest treasures. This introduction to the Lindisfarne Gospels shows a selection of illuminated images at the same size as they appear in the original book, with accompanying text provided by a leading authority on the magnificent work.
