Published in 1846, "The Old Stoic" is a short soliloquy of an old stoic who is about to die. Nothing is known of the narrator (not even their gender) but they laugh at the idea of hoarding wealth, love, and fame. All they want is to possess the same strength of heart that they currnetly have. Their only prayer is to remain a free person and not be a slave to riches or love of fame.
