Only for Die-Hard Comic Lovers who want their lost treasure back. Indrajal Comics was very popular comic brand in India between 1960 & 1990. Published by the publisher of the Times of India, Bennett Coleman and Co, it produced about 805 issues from 1964 to 1990. Major characters were syndicated from King Features, and included The Phantom (more than 50% of material featured the Phantom), Mandrake the Magician, Flash Gordon, Bahadur, Rip Kirby, Buz Sawyer, etc.. From 1964-1982, the issues were numbered linearly from 1-443. Issues No.123 and No.124 were not printed due to industrial strike. To avoid confusion among Indian readers, there were some minor changes done to the name of the Phantom's location and some characters in stories published in Indrajal Comics. The term " Bengali" or "Bengalla" or "Bengal" was changed to "Denkali" and in some issues "Dangalla" as well. This was since there is a state called "Bengal" in India and this may lead the readers to wonder about the "Pygmy" people that don't exist in Bengal. From January 1983, No.444, was identified as Vol.20, No.1, till it ended at Vol.27 No.8, which would have been No.805 as per the original scheme. The series was variously published as a weekly, monthly and fortnightly. Apart from English, Indrajal Comics published the stories in at least a dozen other Indian languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil and Kannada.

Mint condition. The Childhood of the Phantom - by Lee Falk and Wilson McCoy The Phantom's Boyhood, Part 2 - by Bill Harris and Bill Ligante The Phantom's Engagement - by Lee Falk and Wilson McCoy Yes - by Lee Falk and Sy Barry The Proposal - by Lee Falk and Sy Barry The Wedding of the Phantom - by Lee Falk and Sy Barry The Heirs - by Lee Falk and Sy Barry The Tree House - by Lee Falk and Sy Barry The Romancing of Diana Palmer - By Barry Stubbersfield Cover art by Romano Felmang The Wedding Special, has been compiled by us to celebrate The Phantom and Diana’s 40 years of nuptial bliss. It was a long journey in the making but The Phantom eventually married his childhood friend and teenage sweetheart Diana Palmer on 24th November, 1977. Lily Palmer, Diana’s mother was never totally comfortable with her daughters choice of a man who lived his life in a distant jungle. The notion of a him as a suitable candidate for Diana was a cause for great motherly concern. Living with a purple clad hero in a jungle Skull Cave wasn’t really what Lily had hoped for her daughter’s future. Nonetheless, when pressed by the Phantom for her permission to marry Diana, she acquiesced through a veil of tears. She is clearly impressed by the cavalcade of prominent guests that attend the wedding ceremony and softens her position over time. I am quietly confident that for those of you whom we lovingly refer to as Falkists, there will be little to disappoint in this Ruby Anniversary celebration! You know who you are! It is our intention to choose stories that document the significant milestones in the lengthy history of friendship and courtship between the dynamic couple. Where better to start than at their first meeting? This story is not in published sequence having been created by Lee Falk in 1959 and I must point out that there is another version of the same story with a different ending published as early as 1944. This story gets pride of place as our opener since it depicts The Phantom as a boy meeting Diana in childhood and it traverses their friendship into adolescence. Diana’s marriage has been on the agenda for a considerable period of time since 1943 when Lee Falk and Wilson McCoy created The Phantom’s Engagement. No fewer than 16 other men were eager to marry Diana over the course of the Phantom’s premarital history. Some of them perfectly eligible and others were simply rogues with bad intentions. Our historian Barry Stubberfield has been burning the midnight oil preparing a very thorough essay documenting the romancing of Diana which I have included as a little something extra for those that are fascinated by the detail. This is a celebration of creation comic, with stories that you would expect to find in a Wedding Anniversary issue. I have stayed away from the other suitor’s stories in preference for pivotal Diana and The Phantom relationship moments. We’ll reminisce the meeting, various proposals, engagement, the wedding and honeymoon, childbirth and the building of an unconventional family home! Find a comfortablespot to put your feet up and enjoy this very special relationship.

The Dark River: Story by Magnus Knutson and art by Jaime Vallvé. Phantom by Gaslight Ep 4 - Weathering Hate: Story by Christopher Sequeira and art by Jason Paulos. Cover art by Antonio Lemos. This Phantom story comes to us from Team Fantomen and was first published by them in Fantomen 1/1972. Written by Magnus Knutsson it is of particular significance since it represents the very first Phantom story to have been drawn by artist Jaime Vallvé. Jaime Vallvé’s style became very popular in the 70’s and 80’s. His particular attention to detail in historical context set him apart from many of his contemporaries. He went on to draw some 116 Phantom stories throughout his career. His full name was Santiago Jaime Vallvé Peralta. He was a Spanish born artist living in Denmark. Magnus Knutsson who wrote the story had previously edited the Italian Phantom stories produced by Fratelli Spada that were being published in Fantomen. Eventually, he was offered the opportunity to write completely new scripts which were along more modern themes. Hence, The Dead River is the first to show Bengali’s neighbour Rhodia and there abhorent and systematic racial segregation policy known as apartheid. It is interesting to note in this story both Colonel Weeks and his successor Colonel Worubu appear, but by this stage Colonel Weeks had been appointed to General Staff allowing Worubu to be the man in charge of the Jungle Patrol. I’m glad we got that cleared up!

Trouble in the Twelve Nations: Story by Tony DePaul and art by Terry Beatty. The Wiseguy: Story by Tony DePaul and art by Terry Beatty. The Stamp: Story by Tony DePaul and art by Mike Manley. Cover art by Massimo Gamberi. I always enjoy putting these Sundays and Dailies together. I find it a much more satisfying way to read the Phantom once the story is finished and presented in its totality. This is a sentiment that I know many of you share! Contained within this festive issue are 3 stories that have graced the pages of newspapers in the US and across the globe. The first of them being, Trouble in the Twelve Nations which was the 183rd Sunday story written by Tony DePaul with art by Terry Beatty. There is a small crossover and a cameo appearance made by Mandrake the Magician in this story which also features Lothar, his cousin Monar and the menacing presence of Otanko in a plot full of political intruque with a twist in the tale! The second story in this publication is The Wiseguy, also by Tony DePaul and Terry Beatty. It is the 184th Sunday story which is centred around a classic Mafioso style gang, the D’Moda crime family. Our final story is The Phantom Stamp, this is a daily strip written by Tony DePaul but with art by Mike Manley, who was brought in to fill the void after the untimely passing of Paul Ryan. This is the 246th Phantom daily story but it is Mike Manley’s third and he would appear to be very capable and comfortable in the job. I was particularly delighted to see the elegant gentleman resplendantly attired in bowler hat with walking cane functioning as a narrator in the early stages of the story. It is a great idea to have Lee Falk enter as a character and lay out the landscape of the story. It brings a sense of history and acknowledgment to the origin of the Phantom.

If you get Kari Leppänen and Claes Reimerthi working together on a story, then the result is almost inevitably going to be a gritty, dark tale, presented with enormous care and devotion to detail, particularly when set in another place and time. Dovetailing snuggly in with the period we have also found the space to bring you Episode 5 of our Phantom by Gaslight Series in which writer Christopher Sequeira and artist Jason Paulos introduce us to a literary, triumvirate of villainy whose dastardly activities will not only be most delightfully entertaining but will require some teamwork for the Phantom to combat.
