An Edinburgh genetics student discovers an unexpected gene sequence appearing with increasing frequency in blood donations and posts an innocent query on a specialty website. Within hours she discovers the query has been removed, her Instagram account hacked, and the security services want to question her about bioterrorism. On the other side of the city a notorious ‘sink’ school has suddenly topped the national examinations league and, in a California correctional institute young offenders suddenly start studying for degrees. Both are aided by Odyssey, a mysterious educational organisation with incredibly deep pockets and links to a giant tech company. Is there a connection? Who’s behind it and what’s the ultimate goal?
