The Taking of the Gry is a novel by John Masefield published in 1934, and set in the fictional Latin American nation of Santa Barbara, also the setting for Odtaa, Sard Harker, and part of The Midnight Folk. The novel is set in 1911, sometime after Don Manuel, the benevolent dictator in Sard Harker, has died. It is an adventure story about the taking of a ship called 'the Gry'. It additionally features the only known map (or, rather, map illustration) of the City of Santa Barbara, and an Appendix setting out fictional historical background to Santa Barbara. This gripping, entertaining story tells of a revolution in the tiny republic of Santa Ana on the Spanish Main, and details the foolhardy, desperate attempt of two men to 'kidnap' an ammunition ship, the Gry, from a harbor held by their enemies. How they manage this feat and how they elude their pursuers make this a fast-paced, thrilling tale of adventure on the high seas that builds to a breathtaking climax.
