Based on an old English folk song, The Thief Sovay is the story of Sophia Wyck, a nobleman’s daughter turned highway bandit. While traveling to a neighboring estate, Sophia and her family are held up by highwaymen and Sophia is separated from her companions by one of the robbers. He accuses Sophia of concealing a diamond necklace on her person and begins to forcibly search her. Because he addresses her by a strange name, Sophia knows she is not his intended victim. Miraculously, two gentlemen arrive in time to save the travelers from further harm. One is Captain Garrett Sinclair. Sinclair chases off Sophia’s assailant and while she is grateful she also finds the captain abrasive.Sinclair is a government agent intent on capturing one of Napoleon’s spies. He is strongly attracted to Sophia, however his mission puts him frequently at cross-purposes with the impetuous young woman.Sophia discovers that Sinclair’s young sister was the intended victim of the bandits. Fearing her new friend will be assaulted too, Sophia dresses up as a highwayman and sets out to save both of the Sinclairs. Motivated by the urge to bring the brute who assaulted her to account she continues to run afoul of Captain Sinclair’s determination to keep her safe.Sophia’s quest for justice and Sinclair’s hunt for his quarry bring them together in an overnight pursuit of two villains. As a consequence, Sophia’s reputation is ruined. Now Sinclair must persuade Sophia that his plan to redeem her good name is preferable to social ostracism. And Sophia must convince herself that she can spend her life with a man who does not love her.
