Hope Wilson, a correspondent for The New York Times and her husband, Wil, a world-renown archaeologist, are living, during his sabbatical, in Washington, D.C. Hope happens to witness the crash of Freedom Airway's Flight 2652 into an oil refinery, and suddenly they are catapulted into the blinding media limelight. Freedom Airway's ruthless and corrupt CEO lead the press to believe a disgruntled co-pilot caused the accident, but Hope receives a strange message suggesting a mechanical failure caused the air crash. Meanwhile, Kathreen Steele, Wil's vicious and revenge-driven nemesis, is mysteriously pardoned by the president. In retaliation for Wil's foiling her plans (in Wil's Bones) Kathreen kidnaps the Wilsons' two-year-old, Steven, and uses him as bait to get revenge, and implicates the corrupt CEO of Freedom Airways. Wil is wounded in a confrontation with Kathreen, causing the family to struggle with the issues of death, denial, and reconciliation. Suddenly Kathreen pays one last surprise visit, and the sparks fly!
